How To Keep Your Lips In Top Top Shape This Winter!
Whether you're on the East Coast like I am, where New York winters are cold, long and snowy or a West Coaster where a winter in LA means temperatures drop to a freezing 55 degrees fahrenheit (rolls eyes), there is no getting around the dry air winter brings no matter what climate you're in. Dry air wreaks havoc on the lips and no matter what you do, if you aren't equipped to battle it, you end up with chapped, painful lips. (That's never any fun.) The lips tend to be one of the most neglected areas of skin. A lot of us tend to focus moisturizing and exfoliating our faces and body but never the skin. You NEED to moisturize and exfoliate the lips in order to keep them supple, soft and healthy. Traveling from coast to coast lately has increased the importance of products that work for me in a variety of climates. The following products and steps keep these lips of mine in tip top shape throughout the entire winter.
Exfoliating is the processing of removing dead skin cells using an abrasive substance. The perks of exfoliating is glowing, youthful looking skin. My absolute favorite lip exfoliator is the Fresh Sugar Lip Polish. The sugar grains are super fine, making it a mild exfoliator. IT also tastes really good! (Though, I don't recommend actually eating the product) I increase the power of exfoliation by brushing the lip polish in with a tooth brush. Your lips are left softer than a baby's bottom.
Moisturizing is key to protecting the skin from the harsh dry winter air. Lips balms come in two formulas matte and glossy. Either formula will provide the same amount of protection from dry air, the choice is based more on personal preference. I have two lip balms that I absolutely cannot live without, one being matte and the other being glossy.
Matte Lip Balm
Burt's Bees Mango Lip Balm is the OG lip moisturizer in my life. I've always had an issue finding a lip balm that actually worked for me. When I was in high school I would always use Blistex Lip Medex (as did everyone else around me, it might have been a New York thing), but I would find myself reapplying every five minutes. When I began using Burt's Bees Mango Lip Balm, I realized that I would only apply about twice a day without feeling any discomfort or dryness. It provided a natural, flat finish without sacrificing the look of supple, full lips.
Glossy Lip Balm
This is my current favorite lip balm, it is the Purlisse Daily Lip Nourisher. It has Mango and Shea Butter (I obviously have a thing for Mango), and has a glossy finish that will have you lips looking juicy and extra full. I am honestly obsessed with this lip balm and was super excited when the owner of Purlisse, Jennifer Yen handed me a care package at Generation Beauty San Francisco. (Love you Jen!) I will be doing a post soon containing all of my favorite Purlisse products, I credit the line with rescuing my skin from continuous neglect in the past couple of weeks!
Isn't it so much easier to keep those lips nice and supple this winter than you originally thought you could?! Whether you like them looking natural, or glossy for the gods (or if you're like me who bases their lip balm choice based on the day's mood), keeping your lips in tip top shape is as easy as two quick steps.
