Beauty Blogger Essentials
I get a lot of questions regarding how I built my website, what apps I use for editing photos, what camera I use to take selfies etc. So I figured I would dedicate a post to the 'behind the scene' essentials of a blogger (can apply to different types of blogger, not just beauty related blogs). So grab a notepad, screenshot, get inspired and don't forget that every one of your favorite influencers started somewhere so don't get discouraged and just start!
The camera is a blogger's best friend. It captures the vision of what the blogger sees in their mind and makes it available to anyone who is interested. We live in a time where most of us have smartphones with a pretty good quality camera as a standard. The iPhone, for example, is a good starting point for a blogger, especially in the early days when money isn't abundant. The key to a high-quality iPhone selfie is good lighting! You MUST shoot in good lighting or the picture may appear grainy which really ruins the quality of content. I have two cameras, a Canon Rebel T5i with a Sigma 30mm lens (used mostly for indoor video content), and a Canon Powershot G7X II (used mostly for vlogs and most of my selfies). I am obsessed with Canon and would recommend looking into their cameras if you're interested in taking that step and investing in a high-quality camera.
Now that I live in California I tend to go for natural sunlight but if you aren't fortunate enough to live in such a sunny place or if most of your time to take pictures is at night I would recommend getting soft boxes. I know pretty much EVERYONE on Instagram and Youtube used ring lights for their selfies, but personally, I hate how they wash out my skin and I am not a fan of the halo effect they give your eyes. Soft boxes are also much cheaper than ring lights, which is a major plus! I got my Limo Studio soft boxes on Amazon and they were super easy to assemble as well as transporting them all the way to California with me. I highly recommend them!
So now that you're taking your selfies, you want to make sure they look amazing. Most of the time a high-quality camera will capture blemishes and texture that the human eye won't see and you want the image to look as perfect as it looks in the mirror. Facetune is a life changing app when you decide to get serious on social media because it will transform a regular photo into something you would see out of a magazine. It's also much easier to use than Photoshop and requires very little skill. Most recently, an updated version of Facetune (Facetune 2) was released and has even more, editing options. (My friend Kenneth was showing me how it works and I was amazed!)
Unless you're an extremely talented graphic designer with extensive knowledge of coding, you will probably need to sign up to a website builder such as Squarespace (this is what I used to create this blog), WIX, GoDaddy etc. Whichever website builder you decide to use for your blog be sure to familiarize yourself with all of the features before launching it to the public. There are so many options on Squarespace to choose from and what I love about them is that it is very easy to create a professional looking website without a hassle or help from an expert. (My blog has gone through 3 major aesthetic changes and all have been super easy to do!) I was also able to create an email using my websites domain (domain is the name of your website) through Squarespace, it was included in the tier (level of service on Squarespace) that I chose which was super awesome and gives you major professional points!
This is the most important essential to being not only a blogger but a social media influencer in general. Tons of people may have the same camera, lighting, products among many other things but no one has your exact personality. You must CAPITALIZE on this. I've learned that as you grow on social media your loyal followers become invested in your personal life as much as they do on your content and it is because they feel a connection with you. Your personality will show through on the style of your content, how you brand yourself and everything that will have to do with you and your aesthetic, so make it authentic and have fun!
I really wanted to keep this post short and sweet as to not overwhelm you! I really do hope it inspires you to begin to write/film content that you think people would want to watch and learn. The only thing stopping you is yourself and I know it can be tough and you can beat yourself up whenever you feel lazy or discouraged (I feel like that often), but there is nothing better than being proud of your work and helping others achieve the best possible versions of their selves.
If you would like me to expand on any of the topics mentioned above or if you have any questions in mind, feel free to write them in the comments down below so I can get back to you and help you along this journey! xoxo.
