NY vs. LA

NY vs. LA

The East Coast and West Coast have been in constant friendly competition since the dawn of time. By East Coast, West Coast what everyone really means is New York and Los Angeles. New York and LA are the first and second biggest cities in the US so it is easy to see why people would compare the two even though they're essentially polar opposites in almost every aspect. With all of these differences, who really takes the crown for the better city?

1. People

New York is infamous for having a less than nice reputation when it comes to its people. But as a native New Yorker, I have more of an inside scoop than the average person. New Yorkers may not be the friendliest people but they are definitely very raw and very honest which are two pluses in my book. The city is the most diverse on the planet and has every personality and cultural background imaginable. On the other hand, Angelenos are known for their very relaxed attitude and overall happy demeanor BUT, also have a reputation for being very superficial and fake (Being a frequent visitor to LA, I can see where this stigma stems from but NOT EVERYONE IS LIKE THIS.). In my opinion, if you could morph the raw honesty of a New Yorker and the relaxed happy demeanor of an Angeleno you'd have the perfect mix.

2. Food

The more diverse the city, the better the food. There are so many options to eat in New York and best of all most places are open 24 hours. LA on the other hand is known for its Asian and Mexican cuisine, which is honestly amazing but I can only handle but so much of two kinds of food. I truly can't live without my New York pizza. (It's the first thing I eat as soon as I land back home)

3. Weather

Okay, everyone knows that LA weather is absolutely perfect. The sky is literally blue every single day and is consistently warm throughout the year though the beautiful, dry weather has it under a never ending drought. (30 minute shower limits?) New York experiences four seasons with obnoxiously humid summers and very snowy winters. (I hate humidity and snow.) It's pretty obvious that LA has this category in the bag.

4. Transportation

New York is known for having one of the largest public transportation systems in the world, which also runs 24 hours. It is my savior when I'm leaving the club in the wee hours of the morning. This is the main reason I am 20 and have never driven a car in my life LOL. (It's actually pretty rare for New Yorkers to have a driver's license) Although it's a pretty jam packed city, traffic isn't really an issue so it's a win, win. LA on the other hand is definitely a motor city. You drive EVERYWHERE. There's a small subway system but it literally takes you no where. You encounter traffic pretty much everyday BUT Uber and Lyft is super cheap out there so if you don't know how to drive like myself, you still have a cheap way of getting around town.

5. Fashion

New York is the fashion capital of the world. Enough said.

6. Beauty

Kylie Jenner is quintessential California beauty.

If you ever walk down the street in LA you will find countless ads for botox, plastic surgery and beauty products. It is a beauty obsessed city where the most important thing is to look your absolute best. (I mean if your chances of being around a perfectly manicured celebrity are higher than the average American, I can understand the pressure to look good LOL) Also, pretty much everyone goes to the gym and carbs are a total no, no.  (Unless you're heading to In-N-Out) I personally get asked "Are you from LA?" because I'm much more interested in beauty and have a more casual sense of style than the average New Yorker but then I open my mouth and the New York accent comes out in full swing. LOL. While traveling on the subway in New York, you will notice that women prefer a more natural approach to their makeup and focus more so on their outfit. So I do believe that this category depends on your taste but Los Angeles is definitely the beauty centric city of the two.

7. Party Scene

LA doesn't have a really large club scene, at least not as big as the countless reality shows based there make it seem. House parties are really common and they usually take place at a celebrity or socialites hillside mansion overlooking the city. (At least that's how everyone imagines them LOL) Bars generally close at midnight and clubs close by 2 am. As a New Yorker this is a HUGE disappointment as clubs here close at 4 am the earliest but it isn't uncommon for a club to stay open till 6 am. Most bars will also stay open till 4 am. It is truly the city that never sleeps.

So who wins the battle of the perfect city? It honestly all depends on your taste and lifestyle. If you want a casual, relaxed lifestyle with perfect weather year round, definitely LA. If you crave buzzing city life, diversity, and 24 hour service in pretty much everything, definitely New York. What would you prefer to be, a New Yorker or an Angeleno?
